The Brexit Freedoms Bill – where will it take us? Seminar recording and papers

Matrix Chambers hosted the Bar European Group event on the Retained EU Law (Revocation and Reform) Bill 2022-23, chaired by Jessica Simor KC (Chair of the Bar European Group), on 19 October 2022.

Lord Anderson of Ipswich KBE KC, crossbench Peer and barrister, Sir Jonathan Jones KC, Senior Consultant at Linklaters and former Head of the Government Legal Department, and Schona Jolly KC, barrister, all spoke on the Bill.

The Retained EU Law (Revocation and Reform) Bill 2022-23, “Brexit Freedoms Bill”, was introduced on 22 September 2022.  If adopted its effect will be to overhaul the position of EU retained law in the UK, as set out in the EU (Withdrawal) Act 2018 and the EU (Withdrawal Agreement) Act 2020.

The Bill raises serious questions regarding legal certainty, executive legislative powers and how practitioners and the judiciary are going to be able to manage its implications. The BEG called this event at short notice to raise awareness and enable discussion of the serious questions it raises and its implications at the stage when the Bill is still going through Parliament. Over 100 BEG members attended the lively debate both in-person and virtually.
