Salzburg, Austria, 29-30 May 2022

In 2022 the Bar European Group’s annual overseas conference will once again be taking place in situ, in Salzburg.
The 2022 BEG Annual Conference will take place in Salzburg, Austria. The final conference programme and registration forms can be downloaded at the bottom of this page.
Salzburg is the fourth largest city in Austria and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is the birthplace of Mozart and the location for The Sound of Music.
The conference will take place on Sunday 29 May 2022 to Monday morning 30 May 2022.
The conference theme will be EU-UK Relations Law and Practice and will explore the latest developments in retained EU law from the twin perspectives of practice and legal theory, taking in the UK-EU Treaties and Protocols, as well as presenting UK and Continental perspectives on the latest constitutional debates in the EU itself.
As usual, there will be a conference dinner for delegates and accompanying persons, which will be held at the magnificent St Peter Stiftskulinarium restaurant (thought to be the oldest restaurant in Europe, dating back to 803). It is hoped to organise a “Sound of Music” tour for the accompanying persons on Sunday 29 May and an optional Mozart tour for delegates and accompanying persons on the Monday afternoon.
The conference venue and hotel will be the Sheraton Grand Hotel, Salzburg.

The Sheraton Grand is a modern conference hotel with spectacular city views. The hotel backs onto the beautiful grounds of the Schloss Mirabell, with its famous dwarf garden and Pegasus fountain, which were the venue for the song “Do, Re Mi” in The Sound of Music. It is an easy 10 minutes’ walk from the Old Town shops and restaurants, Cathedral and castle. It is also adjacent to the Paracelsus Baths and Spa for those keen on a swim or sauna with a view.
Special conference rates have been negotiated €195 for a single room or €220 for a double room. The Bar European Group has reserved 35 rooms at the Sheraton Grand Hotel which can be booked on a first come first served basis. In order to book your room, please book via this link.
The Hotel have confirmed that your reservation may be cancelled up to 14 days prior to arrival without charge and after this time you will be charged 100% of the accommodation charges. There are a number of other hotels in the vicinity at a wide range of price points.
The nearest airport is Salzburg Airport (SZG) with direct flights out currently offered by Ryanair from Stansted Airport. The alternative route is to fly to Munich, where many airlines operate to. Depending on numbers, we will seek to organise one or more coach transfers from the designated airports in due course.
The John and Sophie Laws Scholarships and Peter Duffy Scholarship
The Bar European Group offers a number of fully paid scholarships (usually a minimum of six) for students and pupils wishing to come to the Salzburg conference. The scholarships are funded in the main by several Chambers whose members practise EU law. As ever we are extremely grateful for their continued support.
Applicants must be current BPTC students or pupils with an interest in EU Law, or past BPTC students who have been accepted for pupillage beginning in 2022. The scholarships are usually awarded to candidates in whose future practice EU law is likely to play a prominent role. Scholars will have travel, accommodation and conference fees paid for them. In return they will also publish a conference report in The European Advocate and join BEG.
Applications should be sent by email to Victoria Wakefield QC at victoria.wakefield@brickcourt.co.uk marked ‘BEG scholarship’, with a CV (no more than 1 page of A4) together with a short note setting out why the applicant is suitable for this award. Please note the closing date of 30 November 2021.
We very much hope you will be able to join us for another enjoyable BEG weekend.
